You can have a beautifully crafted resume and strong references, but a bad interview may still destroy your chance at becoming a part of a company. Job interviews can be very subjective, as every interviewer you meet will be different. Even so, there are a few common interview mistakes that you can avoid in order to make the best impression possible on your new employer:
1. Failing To Prepare
You should study for an interview like you would study for a test. You want to learn detailed information about a company so you can demonstrate how your particular skill set would fit in. It's a good idea to do so much research you can bring up something important going on in the company, such as a recent merger. This will set you apart from other candidates and this level of preparation can even help make you feel less nervous.
2. Failing To Sell Yourself
Look at interviews from this perspective. You are the product and the employer is the buyer. For an interview to be successful, you want to explain to the employer why they need you as a part of the team. Your resume isn't enough, you want to broadcast your accomplishments. There are times in life that it's good to be humble, but an interview isn't one of them. Never downplay your past accomplishments- you have worked hard in your life and should be proud of what you've done.
3. Answering The "What's Your Biggest Weakness?" Question Wrong
This is a big one that stumps many interviewees. If you answer this question with something like "I work too hard" or "I take work too seriously" you are telling the employer that you lack self-awareness, can't handle constructive criticism well, or aren't too serious about the interview. This question will be asked during most job interviews, so think ahead. While preparing for your interview, assess yourself and find an honest answer. The interviewer will appreciate the fact that you can assess your own strengths and weaknesses.
