Signs You're in the Wrong Career Field

Consistently across Gallup worldwide polls, less than 15% of employees report that they are truly happy at their place of work, and this has cost employers 500 billion dollars annually. Job dissatisfaction not only affects your employer and coworkers, it will ultimately take a toll on your physical and mental health as well.

Unhappy workers tend to spend more time in isolation, are at increased risk for depression and cardiovascular diseases, have diminished levels of creativity, and a lack of overall motivation.

Signs You're in the Wrong Career Field

Studies have found that happy employees are not only 20% more productive, they are often much more successful than their counterparts. If you're irritable, stressed, unmotivated, and experiencing any of the other debilitating symptoms of depression due to your job, you're definitely in the wrong field.

  • Sign 1: Laziness, procrastination, and a lack of motivation - Constantly putting your work off to scroll through your feed, tidy around the house, and binge watch reruns on television are huge red flags. If you're truly happy with your career, work will not feel like a chore.

  • Sign 2: Irritability and stress - Making mountains out of molehills? Crying over spilled milk? Perhaps your temper is the result of displaced aggression. Taking out your repressed hatred for your job on inanimate objects and loved ones alike is unhealthy, destroys your relationships, and is a sign it's time to do a little soul searching until you find a position that doesn't leave you on edge at all times.

  • Sign 3: Shame and reluctance - Your career should be something you take pride in. If you are ashamed to tell others where you work, or frequently avoid discussing work, you're definitely in the wrong field.

  • Sign 4: Taking excessive and unnecessary amounts of time off - We all need time off to replenish our spirits, but when this becomes the default, it can be a bad sign. A position you genuinely enjoy will fill you with excitement - you should even look forward to going to work each day. If you regularly take unnecessary time off from work and avoid business gatherings as much as possible, you clearly resent aspects of your job.

If you’re experiencing these symptoms of being in the wrong career field, it’s time to take charge of your life and switch career tracks. At HireVibe, we believe in matching candidates with roles where they’ll feel happy and authentically themselves.
